I think I can speak for everyone when I say that life is full of trials. No one seems to be exempt from the difficulties and hardships that come our way, but it’s how we handle these things that make all the difference in the world. After a while, you may feel like you’re going around in circles with nowhere to turn. The answer to all of your problems seems so far away, and you don’t see any clear path for your life. If that’s the case, then allow me to tell you about one possible solution: prayer.
I’m not just talking about praying in general terms. I mean getting down on your knees and really reaching out to God with all that you have. It’s a really great way to find peace and strength, especially when everything else is falling apart around you. Here are 10 ways to find peace through prayer:
1. Pause Everything You’re Doing for Just One Minute
Before you begin praying, just take a moment and pause everything that you’re doing so that you can focus all your attention on this special moment. You may want to take a deep breath or two, but then you should close your eyes and let out any tension in your body.
2. Remind Yourself How Wonderful God Is
Before you begin talking to God, take a moment to meditate on the Creator of the universe. Think about how amazing it is that we can communicate with Him through prayer, and how He loves us so much that He will listen to our every word. It’s also good to remember other things about God: His mercy, His faithfulness, or how we should always keep in mind “the judgment of the living and the dead” (Lumen Gentium, no. 49).
3. Admit Your Sins and Ask for Forgiveness
Many people make the common mistake of approaching prayer as if they were going before a judge, but that’s not how God wants us to feel at all. Rather, He desires our prayers to be more like a private conversation with a friend. In order to do that, you must start by admitting your sins to God and asking for forgiveness. It’s not about getting things off of your chest so much as it is about showing Him how much you love Him and want to be closer to Him in every way.
4. Express All Your Feelings in the Most Sincere Way Possible
Since prayer is just a conversation, you should try your best to express all of the emotions that are within you. Prayer isn’t just about asking God for things; it’s also about telling Him how wonderful He is and how much we appreciate everything He’s done for us. If there are certain requests you want to make of God, then it’s important to be as specific as possible.
5. Close with an Act of Contrition
Before you conclude your prayer, be sure to end it by saying some sort of act of contrition. This is the best way you can demonstrate to God how truly sorry you are for any sins that might have slipped out during your time of prayer. It may not be possible to express sorrow for all your sins at once, but you can still resolve from this day forward to avoid these things whenever possible.
6. Open Your Eyes and Go Through Your Day with a New Sense of Purpose
Once you’ve finished praying, open your eyes and try not to constantly think about what just happened. You don’t want your prayer life to become a constant distraction, but rather an opportunity for you to seek God throughout the rest of the day. Just try your best to go about your daily routine with a new sense of purpose in everything that you do.
7. Stay Positive at All Times
While prayer can be filled with doubt at times, it’s important that you keep your thoughts positive while you’re praying. If you focus too much on the negative, then it will be harder for God to work in your life. Try not to think about how hopeless or helpless you feel; instead, focus on the many blessings that God has already given you and how happy He would make you if only you were able to receive them.
8. Always Practice Meditation
Meditation is a great way to make sure that you can pray in the proper frame of mind at all times. Just sit in silence and try your best to rid yourself of all thoughts, or to focus on one single prayer for an extended period of time. Either way, just be sure that you’re in a calm and peaceful place before you begin.
9. Seek to Communicate with God in Other Ways, Too
Although prayer is the most important way you can communicate with God, it’s not the only way. In fact, many Christians find that having a relationship with Christ through service is just as rewarding. Whenever possible, try to put your faith into practice by helping the poor, sick, or needy in some way.
10. Always Remember How Lucky You Are to Be Able to Pray at All
Finally, always remember that most people all over the world are unable to pray because they have no access to the church or even God Himself. This may sound trivial now, but just think about how different your life would be if you couldn’t pray or attend church. You should always be grateful that you have the ability to do so since being thankful for what you have is one of the best ways to show God just how much He means to you.
