Bible study can sometimes feel like a chore. But it doesn’t need to be that way. Try some of these tips next time you’re studying God’s word and watch how much more fun it gets!
1. Changing Perspective
The best way to make Bible study more fun is to change your perspective! Instead of focusing only on the facts, try looking at things from a different point of view. For example, you could read something as simple as “the Pharisees were hypocrites” and instead think about how they would feel if they heard that statement. How would you feel if someone called you a hypocrite? What kind of feelings would go along with that idea? You can use this same method for almost any story in the Bible!
2. Use your imagination
This is one of the most fun ways to make Bible study more fun! Using your imagination can bring any story to life. It also helps you see things that the original writers may not have intended for you to notice. For example, let’s say you’re reading about Noah and the ark. On this particular day in class, your teacher asks you to pretend you are one of the animals going into the ark. What animal would you be? How does it feel to go into a boat knowing that the world is about to flood and kill everyone and everything else? What do your classmates look like as animals? Are they scared, or just excited about what’s coming next?
3. Look for symbolism
Symbolism is when an author uses something in place of another thing to represent it. It’s like the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” For example, when Jesus was baptized by John, did you know that there are usually pictures put into stained glass windows to show this event? In the picture, there’s a dove coming down from the sky. The dove is often used as a symbol for the Holy Spirit. So by looking at this one picture, you know what is going on!
4. Other translations of the Bible
Reading a different translation of the Bible can be really fun! Sometimes, certain words are hard to understand because they’re too old-fashioned. When that happens, you can always look up the definition of a word and then try to find it in another translation (such as The Message version).
5. Read something fun before class
Reading something fun before your next class can be a great way to look forward to your studies. It can also help you get in the right frame of mind for studying God’s word. This is also a good time to think about symbolism or perspectives that might pertain to what you’re studying!
6. Read it out loud
As weird as it might seem, reading a passage out loud can be incredibly fun! By doing this, you get the unique experience of hearing someone else say it and also making your own connection with what you’re studying. Plus, sometimes certain passages sound better when they’re read in different ways.
7. Reversing roles
If you want to have a lot of fun, try thinking about what you would do if you were in the story. For example, say you’re reading about David. What if you were King Saul? What’s it like to be captured by your enemy after trying to kill him?
8. Don’t panic!
Panic and stress can sometimes get in the way of fun and learning. If you just read something that makes you feel uncomfortable, don’t worry! There’s always more to learn.
9. Ask questions!
Asking your teacher questions about what you’re studying can be a great way to make Bible study more fun! It can help you get a deeper insight into the meaning of what you’re reading. This is also a great way of making sure that your teacher knows who’s listening and who isn’t (and it might help them teach better!)
10. Don’t be afraid to laugh
Laughing during Bible study can sometimes be the best way to have fun! Don’t be afraid to enjoy yourself!
