Is There a God, or Are We All Just Making Him Up?

The Big Bang Theory states that the universe began at a single point – then, is stretched and expanded to the universe that we know today. According to phys.org, around 13.8 billion years ago, “all matter was compacted into a very small ball with infinite density and intense heat called a Singularity. Suddenly, the Singularity began expanding, and the universe as we know it began.”

Reading this, I can’t help but wonder, can organisms create themselves and thrive in hostile environments without food? Did the first people wake up after the “bang” and then, all of sudden knew what to do? How on earth did scientists hypothesize that anything and everything can come from a single point? But then, if we think about it, anything and everything actually did.

The Creation Story

Do you like going to museums? What is your favorite painting of all time? Do you like taking photos of people around you and of the places you have gone to? In every art, painting, and photo, there is an artist, a painter, and a photographer. Now, have you seen a photo of the Milky Way galaxy? Do you know that while you’re reading this, astronomers are trying to discover another planet in the vast universe? Genesis 1:1 states, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” The first verse of the Bible establishes Elohim, the Creator of all things.

The Theory of Evolution by Darwin asserts that all creatures were made in progression, from a small being, evolving to the current state all are in. If this is the case, it sure would not take just 9 months for a baby to be born. But according to Psalm 139:13, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” The way we are made and crafted proves the existence of God. The essence of all of creation – the intricacy, the beauty, the majesty – points to the reality of a Creator. Verse 27 states, “So God created man in his image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” This establishes that humankind is made in the image of Someone – God. Men and women manifest the very character of the Creator who existed before time.

Colossians 1:16-17 states that God was there before all things and all things were created by Him and for Him. The eternality of God is seen throughout all of the created things and beings. The details of every season – winter, spring, summer, and fall – the existence of day and night, and the fact of differing timezones, prove that there’s a God who places and sets things in order. Now, let’s look at the great big light: the sun. If it comes any closer by a minute degree to our planet, we won’t be able to take the heat. And if it pulls farther away, we won’t be able to take the cold. This isn’t Big Bang or Evolution, for both cannot be as exact and as detailed. All things are done by a Creator.

The Inerrancy and Infallibility of the Bible

The Old Testament of the Bible was written roughly between 1200 and 185 B.C. while the New Testament was written during the first century A.D. The first five books of the Bible, the Torah, were referenced again and again in the books of the OT and the NT. Countless artifacts have been dug over the years to reflect what is in the Bible and to mirror the events that transpired in the Scriptures. Here are some of the findings and how it connects to the Scriptures:

  • The Pilate Stone: In 1961, archaeologists unearthed a stone with an inscription that says, “Pontius Pilatus, Prefect of Judea”. There are multiple mentions of Pontius Pilate in the Bible such as John 18:29, “So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
  • The Tel Dan Inscription: A stone discovered in 1993 by Avraham Biran in Tel Dan, an inscription is written referencing an “Israelite king from the House of David.” This is the first historical evidence of King David.
  • The Taylor Prism: This prism records the first eight achievements of the Assyrian King Sennacherib. The most interesting account is of his third campaign which states the destruction of forty-six cities and a certain Hezekiah not submitting to his yoke. We can see this in 2 Chronicles 32:1, “…Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself. And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem, he planned with his officers and his mighty men to stop the water of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him.”

Such archaeological findings, albeit incomplete, have shed the light on how the Scriptures coincide with historical events. To prove the existence of God, we must test the inerrancy and the infallibility of the Bible, because the Scriptures are the greatest evidence that there is God. Inerrancy means that the Bible does not claim anything that is untrue. It means that what the Bible tells us as history, are the stories as it is – nothing added nor subtracted. Infallibility means that the Bible is incapable of being wrong – it does not contain any errors.

So, if the artifacts that were written to explain certain historical events and people mirror what is in the Bible, then we can conclude the inerrancy and infallibility of it. Hence, concluding that the God of the Bible is real.

Time magazine, in 2007, stated that the Bible “has done more to shape literature, history, entertainment and culture than any book ever written”. As of 1995, The Guinness World Records reports that the Bible is the best-selling book of all time, with approximately 5 billion copies sold. This won’t be the case if people did not believe that the God of the Bible is true at all.

If there is No God

To be honest, what do we lose if there is no God? Didn’t we benefit from believing in Him much more? I went to enormous lengths for God, didn’t I, and didn’t I experience life much more than someone who doesn’t believe in God? Really, what do we lose when we have none? That is why, praise God, He is real! He is not a figment of our imagination, or a void, or a certain higher “being”. He is God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He is the great “I am.” I firmly believe that I have obtained much more by being convinced that God is real and in the fullness of life that He has given me. If He is not then I still had a fun, freeing, and purposeful life!

The argument that there is no God has been disproven by both the Scriptures and archaeological findings. The existence of God can be seen by our naked eye. I would not sacrifice all these and turn away from Him, no. He is as real as He ever will be in my life and the whole universe.
