The Names of God: What They Mean and Why They Matter

Have you ever wondered what the names of God mean? Why do we use different names for God in different cultures? In this blog post, we will explore the meanings of the names of God and discuss why they matter. Each name of God reveals something about His character and nature. We can learn a lot about who God is by studying the different names that describe Him.

What Are The Names of God?

The name “God” comes from the Hebrew word Elohim. This name refers to God’s power and His authority. It also emphasizes His infinite nature. “Elohim” describes God as the Creator of the universe.

The name “Jehovah” comes from the Hebrew word Yahweh. This name means “I am who I am.” It emphasizes God’s eternal nature and His unchanging character. “Jehovah” translates to “Lord” in English translations of the Bible.

The name “Jesus” comes from the Hebrew word Yeshua. This name means “salvation.” It emphasizes God’s desire to save people from the consequences of their sin by sending His Son, Jesus Christ, into the world. “Jesus” translates to “the Lord” in English translations of the Bible.

The name “Christ” comes from the Greek word Christos. This name means “anointed one.” It emphasizes God’s desire to send His Son into the world to save people from the consequences of their sin. “Christ” translates to “the Lord” in English translations of the Bible.

The name “Son of Man” comes from the Hebrew word bar Enosh. This name means “human.” It emphasizes that Jesus came to this world as a human being and identifies Him with humanity.
