The Bible speaks a lot about divorce. In fact, there are quite a few verses that talk about it. But what does the Bible say about divorce? Is it always wrong?
Let’s take a look at some of the verses that talk about divorce.
The first one is from Deuteronomy 24:

“When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house…”
This verse is talking about how when someone gets married, they may find something wrong with their spouse and decide to get divorced. It says that the person who gets married has a right to write down all of the reasons why they are getting divorced, then give it to their spouse so that they know exactly what happened.
It goes on to say: “…and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if he dies, then her former husband, who divorced her, must not take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled…”
This verse is talking about what happens when someone gets divorced and then remarries. If the second husband hates her, he can write her a certificate of divorce and send her away. Or, if the second husband dies, the first husband cannot take her back to be his wife again.
The next verse is from Matthew 19:
“And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”
This verse is saying that divorce is only allowed if the person has been unfaithful. If they have not been unfaithful, then they are committing adultery by getting remarried.
The next verse is from Mark:

“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”
This verse is saying that divorce is allowed in certain situations. If someone has been unfaithful to their spouse, then they can get divorced without committing adultery. But if they haven’t been unfaithful, then they are committing adultery by getting remarried.
The final verse we will look at today is from Luke:
“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who has been divorced from her husband commits adultery.”
This verse says that divorce is allowed in certain situations. If someone has been unfaithful to their spouse, then they can get divorced without committing adultery. But if they haven’t been unfaithful, then they are committing adultery by getting remarried.
